Dialogue — Greetings

Faustas Projection: Faustas’s projection is already here, facing the wrong way, deep in some thought that has not yet noticed you.

Ah, you return! Faustas Projection: A shimmering projection resolves into an elderly wizard in a crooked hat, hovering inches above the ground. He is facing slightly the wrong way.

Well, well. At last.

One moment, the image is still… there. Better. It took longer than I hoped. A storm of ruined magic is a poor place to find anyone. I have been hunting you across Mirkea since my spell misplaced you, and here you are.

And that dastardly Droop was drinking the magic dry. Nearly impossible to slip a proper projection through until you dealt with it. Jolly good work with that, by the way. The air is settling again.

He notices you properly.

Faustas. Wizard. The spell that misplaced you was mine, so the questions you are about to ask are mine to answer. Ask them. Faustas Projection: The Waygate stirs as you approach, its old stone filling with pale light. Faustas’s projection is already there, leaning into the glow closer than a body could stand. He does not look up.

It answered you.

The projection turns a little toward you. The eyes stay on the stone.

I had hoped it might. Hope is a poor substitute for certainty; this is certainty. The magic from Sylbos’s broken ritual has taken hold in you.

Now he looks at you, and the gate is forgotten.

The Old Ones made this gate. Their works do not wake for just anyone. Some part of their power now recognizes you.

Faustas Projection: Warn you? Yes. In hindsight, that would have been polite, sensible, and considerably less exciting. Two of those are virtues.

The projection steadies, every flicker gone.

I tried to bring you to my tower. I had just broken a ritual of Sylbos’s, and his backlash caught my spell. I aimed for home. The spell chose the Sanctum. That fault is mine. The larger disaster is his.

I will find you a way out. Until I do, keeping yourself alive is your work, and a projection cannot do it for you. Faustas Projection: ‘Dragged’ is an ugly word. Not entirely inaccurate.

I will find you a way out. Until I do, keeping yourself alive is your work, and a projection cannot do it for you. Faustas Projection: Good. Then survive the next hour. The grander business can wait for a roof.

He turns from you to the ruined camp, as though it had asked the question.

Dismantle what is left of this camp, take whatever is still usable, and build yourself a tent and a fire here in the Sanctum. I trust you can manage that. Do save me any interesting mushrooms. I will work on remembering the way out. Faustas Projection: Yes. Though I would prefer we both remain alive long enough for my guilt to become useful.

I will work on remembering the way out. Faustas Projection: The Sanctum. An Old Ones place, or near enough.

It sits on a mountain plateau, though finding the mountain is the trouble. Old magic hides the place from maps. Safe enough for now. Do not mistake old for harmless. Faustas Projection: Excellent. Salvage first, shelter second.

The projection is already losing interest in the conversation, and some of its light. Faustas Projection: Regrettably, yes. An apology won’t keep you warm.

The projection is already thinning at the edges, as if the subject were closed. Faustas Projection: Dismantle the old camp for supplies, build yourself a tent and campfire. Once that is done, return to me. Faustas Projection: Good. And now that you have a roof, I find I have remembered the way out.

He is already looking north, past you.

There is a Waygate that way. It should lead away from the Sanctum. Find it, and I shall meet you there. Faustas Projection: Excellent. North through the passage. I will see you at the gate.

He is already turning north, and the light is going with him. Faustas Projection: Though in my defence, remembering eventually is better than not remembering at all.

He is fading before you can answer that. Faustas Projection: An Old Ones passage. Not a door, exactly. A place where distance becomes negotiable. Find it first. It is easier to explain once it is in front of you. Faustas Projection: Yes. You have earned the truth, or at least as much of it as I can safely give.

The gate’s light is on his face, and there is no amusement left in it.

Sylbos. The Dark Lord of Dolmarok.

He gathers armies, monsters, and corruption under one will. He does not want a kingdom. He wants command over life itself.

His ritual was meant to make him immortal. I broke it before he could claim the power. Some of it found you. Faustas Projection: I suspected. I did not know.

His ritual was meant to make him immortal. I broke it before he could claim the power. Some of it found you. Faustas Projection: A Waygate. An Old Ones passage that folds distance rather than crossing it. If it accepts you, it can carry you away from the Sanctum to places far beyond this mountain, and back again. Faustas Projection: A chance. Narrow, and the only one there is.

Understand what stands at the other end of it. He is the last of the Ogre Magi. There is a reason the title is spoken quietly.

He comes closer. The glow of the gate does not follow him; for a moment he is only a voice.

Use the Waygate. It should take you to Earlwood. From there, come to my tower beyond the Wildwood, and do not dawdle. He is moving, and he will not ignore the one carrying what he meant to claim.

The gate carries you back as well. Your camp is here now; treat this mountain as yours. Faustas Projection: A war. Yes. I will not insult you by using a smaller word.

Nor did anything else he has touched choose it. He is the last of the Ogre Magi. There is a reason the title is spoken quietly.

The gate carries you back as well. Your camp is here now; treat this mountain as yours. Faustas Projection: I do not know. The ritual broke violently. Power seeks vessels, paths, wounds, chances. For some reason, it found you and held on. Faustas Projection: Good. Earlwood first, then the tower. I’ll be waiting. And the Sanctum is yours; come back to it when you need to.

The light is going out of the gate, and out of him with it. Faustas Projection: Sensible. Trust shouldn’t be handed out merely because a wizard appears in glowing light. The Sanctum is yours regardless; come back to it when you need to.

The projection is fading while he speaks, as though the matter were already settled. Faustas Projection: Use the Waygate to leave the Sanctum. It should take you to Earlwood, and from there, come to my tower beyond the Wildwood. The gate will bring you back to your camp whenever you need it. Faustas Projection: A Droop. Usually harmless. Ankle-high and damp, possessed of no ambition beyond being underfoot. This one had been eating stray magic for years. A dreadful diet. Very educational.
